First trial with embryo extraction according to Don Holemans protocol (more or less) with:
R. hugonis x Red Nelly (taken from sowing pot)
PHM x Mozart (taken from late ripened Hip)
With R. hugonis x Red Nelly 2 out of 12 embryos germinated within two days, the other look still good.
Of PHM x Mozart 1 or 2 out of 5 embryos seem to germinate despite rather difficult and therefor crude extraction.
Major work for the winter now done. Tall hybrid teas and grandifloras cut back to head high. Climbers and some OGRs have had rebar supports put in to prepare for the winter winds. I used the blower to remove most of the leaves and all of those that had fallen. Aged mulch from under the kids swingset has been mounded around the bases over the bud union. Now I have to get new mulch for the swingset. It has been a very wet year, a major change from the past several years of drought. This really changed the nature of the problems this year. Mostly, just an increase of fungus related diseases. Apparently either the wetness or the slightly colder winter kept the Japanese Beetles down, but I did see more Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Cucumber Beetles this year.
