Rose Nomenclature
By the Editor
As no doubt some of our members are aware, a very unsatisfactory situation with respect to Rose names has arisen within the past few years due to the practice of certain large commercial firms in re-naming Roses of European origin, contrary to and in defiance of "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature" and its supplementary schedule known as Appendix VII (Nomenclature of Garden Plants).

Minna Kordes, H.Poly. (Kordes) ('Dance of Joy' x 'Crimson Glory'). A rather low growing variety with large 3 inch semi-double, fragrant blooms of rich deep crimson. These are borne in clusters of 5 to 10, and are a very pleasing colour, fading lighter as they age. Unfortunately, the name has been changed, contrary to the rules governing plant nomenclature, to 'World's Fair' in U.S.A. This practice is becoming too common and must inevitably lead to endless confusion. A.A.R.S.

Mina Kordes is a new Hybrid Polyantha. The semi-single flowers are borne in good trusses, and so far seem to be fadeless. It is a welcome addition to this class.

Minna Kordes is very beautiful and novel, a Hybrid Polyantha which gives clusters of semi-double, shapely Crimson Glory blooms; need more be said?

Germany seems to be Polyantha-minded these days, and Kordes Minna Kordes, which has been renamed World's Fair in this country, is a good, large-flowered Polyantha. The 3 1/2 inch blooms have 18 petals, and its scarlet crimson colour is brilliant in summer, the petals taking on blackish shades as cool weather approaches; but what appealed to me more than anything else is a delightful spicy fragrance, a rare virtue in Polyanthas. Growth was good, and the extra large foliage pleasing.
