This yellow perennial, "Calendula", or "pot marigold", sows itself in zone 5a. It's my favorite perennial to plant between roses. Its leaves look like green lettuce. The nectar feeds beneficial insects Lacewings, which produce larvae called aphid lions - so my roses don't have any aphids.
