Spring 2014. Two year old plant. Zone 7b. My Gertrudes have suffered from ruthless and successive chomping by deer their first summer and guillotining by ice their first winter. That they survived is remarkable. That said, in my heart of hearts, I know I haven't planted these ladies in a place they will thrive and live a happy life: not enough sun. I know Gertude. If you don't give her what she wants, she'll up and die on you. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But definitely the day after tomorrow.
