Hello:
I love your rose pictures.... I am interested in a couple of the roses you grow..
Autumn, and Spiced Coffee, Do they bloom a lot hold for a while etc....
They are both currently on my Vintage Gardens order but before I send it I wanted the opinion of someone who grows them.
I live west of San Antonio Tx. we have long hot summers, and mostly mild winters.
I know you can't say if they will do well for me. I just wanted your opinion of them.

Thanks,Rose

Hi Rose:
I've had SPICED COFFEE for many yrs, and it's done pretty well for me. I live in the Sierras, where the winters are fairly mild, but we do get occasional snow storms that don't last more than a few days or so. The summers are the hard part. We get weeks and weeks of 100+ temps, and I often lose roses to sunburn death! SPICED COFFEE seems to hold up pretty well. It did the best ever this year. Lots of blooms and decent repeat. I love the range of colors it gets too. Lavender, mauve, tan, pink, apricot, grey, cream. Every bloom is different.
AUTUMN has been a very slow grower and doesn't repeat well at all. I do love it when it blooms tho. The colors are quite interesting, but the blooms can be sort of messy and floppy. My problem with lack of blooms tho seems to be the red volcanic clay soil and the fact that I don't fertilize as much as I should. This yr I added lots of steer manure and bark mulch and did more feeding. Hopefully next season they will all do better. (I also have to contend with the DEER!)
BTW, I do know what your climate is like. We lived in Beeville, TX for 2 yrs when my husband was in the Navy and had shore duty. That was way back in the mid-80's!
Have fun shopping those Vintage roses. I have a big order pending too!

Hi:
I love your rose pictures, I see you have Spiced Coffee does it perform well, bloom a lot etc. I am working on my Vintage Roses list. It is on my wish list and they have it .
I wanted to check with someone who grows it first though. I live West of San Antonio Tx. We have mild winters with hot summers. I realize you can't say if it will so well for me.... I just wanted your opinion of the rose.

Thanks, Rose

Hi,
I noticed you have a picture of Oldtimer, and you live in the Austin area.
I live west of San Antonio and I was considering this rose. It looks very pretty are you happy with it? Is it a frequent bloomer for you? Also how is the fragrance?

Thanks, Rose

I live in zone 7B and my Josephs coat suffers with quite a bit of black spots and the plant is quite thorny.

Thank you for providing this information. I have updated the rose page to show that the rose can get blackspot and is well armed with thorns.

Smiles,

I don't get blackspot but you're right about the thorns. The rose has hundreds of tiny thorns so don't forget your gloves!

I don't know if this will help you or not on the blackspot but it works for me..... I use only organic methods with my roses, mulch well, feed with rose-glo and I put whole ground cornmeal which you can purchase at your local feed store inexpensively around the rose bushes if they show any blackspot problems. I live in hot humid South Texas, and this works well for me. I never spray my roses.
