I just saw this rose at La Sumida Nursery in Santa Barbara this week, and it was absolutely stunning and covered with blooms. And that's from one who's not the biggest fan of single-petaled roses or pink ones, for that matter. I believe they had it growing as a short climber (not unusual for So. Cal.) but I guess it can be grown as a bush, too. For those not in the Santa Barbara area, I see it's also offered at EuroDesert roses right now as 'Astronomia'.

This rose gets powdery mildew at my place and at a friends place the plant is defoliated by blackspot! But it still blooms!

May 2010 "The CHARLATAN" is available at Pastorino's Nursery on the Coast in HalfMoonBay, CA. It was in full bloom & quite charming with the red stamens! The ivory petals have a tinge of violet coloring.

I've seen this rose at two other Bay Area nurseries. Someone seems to have grown a number of these in 5-gallon pots for sales as a landscape shrub. The Charlatan is described as being rust resistant. In coastal California, that will soon be put to the test! The plants I've seen in the nurseries have looked very healthy indeed, with shiny, attractive foliage.
