Almost single flowers of deep purple-crimson, golden stamens, thorny, about 4 feet in height, pale green foliage. Fragrant. Probably a Gallica/Centifolia cross. Vibert (France) 1839.

Parentage unknown. Spotted in two shades of crimson. Takes on a purple cast as the flowers age, golden stamens. Compact, upright. Said to have been raised by J.-P. Vibert of Angers and introduced in 1839, but some suspect it may be older.

‘Alain Blanchard’ = Section Gallicanae. Peut-être un hybride de Rosa x centifolia par Rosa gallica. Obtenu par Vibert en 1839. …Les fleurs semi-doubles, d’abord en coupe et pourpre écarlate foncé, s’ouvrent davantage en se tachetant de marron, puis quelquefois de rose, tandis que s’intensifie le pourpre de la base des pétales. La touffe dorée des étamines rehausse ces couleurs.
