Alida Lovett. Hybrid Wichuraiana. (Dr. W. Van Fleet, 1905.) Bright shell-pink flowers of Hybrid Tea size and quality, lightly shaded with sulphur-yellow at base of the petals; faintly perfumed. Plant extra strong.
Midseason. A sparkling pink variety, with many traits of the popular Dr. W. Van Fleet, but darker in color and of more cupped form.

Alida Lovett. Hybrid Wichuraiana. (Dr. W. Van Fleet, 1905.) Wichuraiana seedling X Souvenir du President Carnot. Bright shell-pink, with shadings of sulphur at the base of petals. It resembles Dr. W. Van Fleet but is of a much darker color and the foliage is even more beautiful; mildew proof.

ALIDA LOVETT.—In habit it is quite like the popular Van Fleet, but with larger and more beautiful mildew-proof foliage. Both buds and flowers are much brighter and larger, besides being of ideal form; are held on stiff stems a foot and a half to two feet long, and the color is a lively bright shell pink with shading of rich sulphur at the base of petals—a combination that is both novel and beautiful. The plant is of strong growth, a free bloomer and of ironclad hardihood; flowering for a long season. It is also quite fragrant. Price, field-grown, each, $1.50; dozen, $15.00.

Alida Lovett was the climber that made the biggest hit of the season at the shows. It is a very beautiful pale pink rose, shading to yellow at the base of the petals, and has long, pointed buds and elegant foliage.

"Recently Dr. Van Fleet has put into commerce three roses included in the Lovett family, of which Alida Lovett is the one illustrated. A hybrid between Rosa Wichuraiana and a Hybrid Perpetual rose as pollen parent, it is of vigorous climbing habit and proved hardiness, having been under observation since 1909. The habit of growth and form of flower resemble Dr. W. Van Fleet, but the color is better, being described as "a lively bright shell-pink, with shadings of rich sulphur at base of petals."

This new climbing rose may be described in brief by saying it is an improved Dr. Van Fleet; and I believe it to be the finest and most valuable climbing rose as yet upon the earth. It is a hybrid of Pres. Carnot and the Memorial Rose produced by the great hybridizer, Dr. Van Fleet, some ten years ago and has ever since its origin been under careful painstaking test. It has not developed a defect. In habit it is quite like the popular Van Fleet but with larger and more beautiful mildew-proof glossy foliage.
Both buds and flowers are large, of ideal form (see illustration of buds and flowers above) are held on strong stiff stems a foot and a half to two feet long and in color are a lively bright shell pink with shadings of rich sulphur at base of petals — a combination that is as beautiful as it is novel. The flowers are of remarkable substance and long lived; whether cut or left to remain upon the bush and are pleasantly perfumed. It is very much brighter and more cheerful in color with larger flowers than the highly prized Dr. Van Fleet. The plant is a strong grower, a free bloomer and of ironclad hardihood; flowering for a long season. When the flowers fade the petals fall at once, instead of remaining upon the bush and thus present an unsightly appearance as with many climbing roses—a very desirable property.
