Mr. Keith Cresswell, Wellington Point, Queensland.
There are probably no true rosarians, especially those getting a bit long in the tooth, who do not have one particular old plant which they love and cherish above all others. It may be one that has served them well over many years, one that brings back happy memories, one that they will always retain in the garden until their rose growing days are over. In my case it is that delightful, but now, middle-aged hybrid tea 'Suzon Lotthe'. This lady was one of the many daughters of 'Peace', and like her mother, was bred in the Meilland nursery on the Mediterranean coast. She made her debut in 1951, and is still a vigorous and tall grower. She regularly produces more blooms than any of the other H.T.s in my garden. They are a little below average size, especially in mid-summer, but they compensate for that by their numbers and their delicate shading from a light pearl pink to lilac at the outer edge of the petals. This is enhanced by, a strong sweet fragrance, even more in evidence as evening approaches. The flowers are fully double and in the cooler weather of good exhibition standard, although our modern exhibitors do prefer something a bit bigger. My only present plant, eleven years old, and on Fortuneana rootstock, is always the first rose to bloom in spring, and she repeats so quickly after a light trimming that I have had six flushes of bloom in one season, the first in mid September and the sixth the following June. 'Suzon Lotthe' has now disappeared from most catalogues, but in spite of all the attractive novelties each year, surely she is a gem that deserves to be kept alive.

Suzan Lotthe grows reasonably well here. Blooms are small in the first year and improve later; colour variable, but the better the plant is nurtured the brighter the shades.
