Agathe Incarnata Rosa agathe incarnata The Agatha rose is dedicated to a Christian martyr, St. Agatha, a Sicilian virgin, born at Palermo, and put to death by Quintianus, Governor of Sicily in AD 251, because she rejected his advances. Her fest day is 5 February and she has, not a rose, but a primrose for her flower. The Agatha incarnata, known to Philip Miller as Rosa incarnata -- is neat, tidy and very sweetly scented, and seems to be the sole survivor of the charming and numerous family.

‘Agathe Incarnata’ = Section Gallicanae. Il doit s’agir d’un hybride entre Rosa gallica et Rosa x damascena; d’ailleurs, l’allure de ‘Agathe Incarnata’ est intermédiaire entre celles de ces deux rosiers. Cultivé avant 1815… feuilles vert-gris et veloutées, fleurs très doubles, plates et en quartiers, avec l’œil en bouton, et variant du rose clair au blanc. Plusieurs roses galliques ont été baptisées ‘Agathe’. On les réunit parfois sous l’appellation anglaise ‘Agathe Roses’ et elles ont en général des fleurs petites et très doubles.

Agathe Incarnata (Prior to 1815) Grows to over a metre and has light green foliage and thorny young shoots. The flowers are palest pink, quartered and have a button eye. Prolific bloomer and fragrant.

(under 'Francofurtana') The grey-green downy leaves cover a compact, thorny bush, which bears neat, flat, fully double flowers, quilled and quartered, with button eyes. Very sweet and beautiful. Vigorous, 5 ft. x 3 ft. Rare. Figured in Redouté.

C'est la Rosa incarnata de Miller, décrite par Guerrapain, figurée par Redouté; elle était très répandue dans les jardins de l'époque, où elle était aussi appelée, dit Prévost, Tout aimable, Tendresse aimable, Caprice de Zéphyre. Certains pépiniéristes la nommèrent Marie-Louise, elle devint, en 1818, la Duchesse d'Angoulême.
