Comparison of old and new canes. Young thorns are crimson, on reddish canes. Old thorns are grey, on olive green canes.

Thorns have a distinctive profile, with a parabolic curve to the lower edge and convex/concave/convex "wave" profile to the upper edge, with the tips being about 75 degrees to the cane. Overall, the plant is moderately thorny.

Foliage has finely-toothed margins, and is matte mid green with a hint of blue.

(Young plant, 5 weeks in the ground, July 18th, 2016, midwinter, subtropics, 9.30 am)
