Rosa zalana was named in 1879 by the Austrian Jesuit priest and botanist Johann Baptist Wiesbaur. He collected in his home country and Central Europe. His epithet "zalana" is possibly a Polish word which translates to "überflutet" in German meaning "flooded". My plant came from the U.C. Berkeley Botanic Garden in 1993.
