[From A Heritage of Old Roses, by Hazel Le Rougetel, p. 25] When he was horticulturist [at the Huntington Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens], John C. Macgregor IV assembled a comprehensive collection of roses (more than 1,600) and contributed much valuable work on identification and classification of older varieties. His successor is Clair Martin III... the Botanical Library there is a good place to do research -- among the references there are early catalogues of Prince, Hovey and others... The Huntington rose garden arrangement is historical, the oldest being in the Herb and Shakespeare Gardens. Photo by Lisa Osta
