[From A Family of Roses, by Sam McGredy and Sean Jennett, p. 34:] Swim breeds for roses with petals that will not fade or burn up in the hot sun, and which, when the flower is going over, will drop their petals cleanly. The foliage, too, must be durable in the heat.

[From Roses, New Models for Old, by Herbert C. Swim, p. 21:] According to Herbert C. Swim, the closest he came to his breeding objective is the rose 'Forty-niner' -- a cross between 'Charlotte Armstrong' and 'Contrast'. Out of this cross also came 'Applause' (which won Swim his first Gold Medal at Bagatelle) and 'Multnomah' (which Swim considered a "spectacular rose in the Northwest"...)

[From Modern Roses 10, p. 734:] Herbert Swim, Ontario, California.
