Since the mid-twentieth century, when Wilhelm Kordes of Germany introduced his hardy, disease-resistant Kordes rose (Rosa x kordesii) and its offspring, modern breeding programs have produced a steady stream of disease-resistant, hardy, repeat-flowering shrub roses for garden and landscape use, often called "landscape roses."
