The big four [roses of Harry Wheatcroft's] time: 'Peace', 'Super Star', 'Queen Elizabeth' and 'Fragrant Cloud'.
p. 26: Peace The most famous rose of them all.... [Wheatcroft] was first to introduce her to Great Britain and over the years [he] sold more specimens of 'Peace' than any other rose. Perhaps a million wouldn't be an overestimate... 'Peace' has become the greatest rose bestseller of all time. Nor merely [in Great Britain], but throughout the world.
p. 124: resents too much pruning

Alex Ross, South Australia.  Our Twelve Best Sellers.
The next most popular must be Mme. A. Meilland ('Peace'). Despite the fact that it has been in commerce for so many years, it still retains its appeal. The soft yellow ground colour with its pink shading, varying at times to quite a deep shade of pink, makes it one of our best. Its unusual habit of growth has evoked some criticism but, by avoiding heavy pruning, it can be quite satisfactory.

Mme. A. Meilland (Peace); The final position was more or less in the melting pot, but this variety seemed to deserve it more than the others. Over twenty years of gracing our gardens, and still in the twelve best sellers. Some say they cannot grow it well, but apparently they keep on trying. Seen very often on the exhibition bench, and please do not think we want to "toss" it. The best way we have ever seen this variety displayed at Rose Shows is when it is given a class to itself, and excluded from some of the other classes. What a sight to see!

R. foetida has provided very important material for hybridisation, in that it indirectly brought its "yellow blood" to our most beautiful yellow roses, such as Peace, Spek's Yellow, President Herbert Hoover and others
