'Burgundy Panarosa' rose Reviews & Comments

FInally gave up on this. Very impressed when I saw it at Kordes in Germany - but in the PNW / SW Canada marine mild climate, 25" rain per year, the blooms only opened 50% of the time - balled up constantly. We don't get much rain, and humidity is modest to low - but one of my worst roses for balling up. I really wanted this one to succeed but got rid of it. Very strong fragrance. Moderate size blooms - not very large. Health otherwise. Average vigour. Had same problem with Earth Angel.

Is this rose vigorous own root?

Yes. I find this rose quite healthy and vigorous own root. I'm frankly quite surprised by the very mediocre reviews on this site. For me, this is a real trooper -- very healthy in my no-spray Texas garden, and overall a better rose than some of my earthkind cultivars at this point. (I believe mine was an ARE purchase.) It currently ranks up there in my top half-dozen cultivars in my garden, FWIW. Mine has only been in the ground a couple years at this point, and I concede that some of the grievances pertaining to the strangely splayed architecture of the young plant are born out with mine, but this seems the case with several of my Kordes roses, and they tend to grow out of the teenage awkwardness as the plant matures.
[update] Okay... I am going to retract my high praise of a few years ago... This bush began to falter as I stopped spoiling the more established plant. (I buy Kordes rose so that I don't *have* to coddle them!) It ultimately died during a drought, while all the (predominantly grafted) roses around survived. (Suffered, yes, but survived nonetheless.)

This rose did not grow much taller than my hand its first year. It arrived to me in rough shape, the poor little thing--so much so that I complained to the grower who said she would replace it but I didn't pursue the issue. Going into 5a winter I expected certain death but nevertheless mounded a bit of dirt over it to mark its grave. To my surprise the thing exploded in spring like Mission Impossible. It has weaponry to match--numerous daggers up and down the canes. It avoids the bullets of blackspot, mildew and rust (a difficult and amazing feat in my dangerous garden world--although I only really have trouble with blackspot). And just like I can't smell the movie, I can't smell this rose. Strange that I can't smell Summer Romance pretty much at all, either. I can, however, smell Beverly, First Crush, and Savannah which are a delight, so not sure what's going on there. Perhaps it needs time to mature or maybe it doesn't like my soil or maybe it's just specific scents my nose doesn't pick up on. The color? Other people's pictures here show it to be much brighter and showy. Mine is a little more muddy-colored and does not stand out in my garden, though the blooms are nicely shaped and still pretty. I will see what next Mission Impossible--er--year--brings and post my report then.
