The Hillier Nurseries have a long history that stretches back to the 1860's. Brothers Edwin Lawrence and Arthur Richard Hillier took over the nursery business in the late 1920's along with a son, Harold Hillier. Harold Hillier was an avid plantsman who established a garden and arboretum of temperate zone woody plants near Romsey. Sir Harold was knighted in 1983 and his gardens and arboretum were gifted to the Hampshire County Council as the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. While the Hillier Nurseries remain in business, their business is garden centres and landscaping trees.
