Walter Berger's nursery in Bad Langensalza, German Democratic Republic, was renamed "GPG Roter Oktober" after his death in 1960. His wife Anni Berger and his son Hermann continued working there. The nursery was finally dissolved in 1990 due to economic difficulties following the reunification of Germany.
GPG is an abbreviation of "Gärtnerische Produktions-Genossenschaft," or Horticultural Production Cooperative. GPG Roter Oktober is also referred to as GPG Bad Langensalza.
