2002 Richard Aitken & Michael Looker Oxford Companion to Australian Gardens p85. Charles Bennett.(fl 1880-90s) landscape gardener and nursery proprietor, was apparently the son of well-known English rose-breeder Henry Bennett (1823-1890). He arrived in Sydney c1886 and by 1890 had established the Standard Nursery, Homebush. ....His Practical Treatise on the Culture of the Rose (1891), a modest but early Australian work on roses, elicited praise from ‘Mrs. Rolf Boldrewood’ in The Flower Garden in Australia (1893). RA.
1887, March 15. the Illustrated Sydney News p23: We are in receipt of the summer rose catalogue of the Standard Nursery Company at Homebush, in which many of the modern advances in this flower are described. It is right to say that the establishment is under the management of Mr. Charles Bennett, son of Mr. Henry Bennett, the successful and enthusiastic raiser of pedigree roses in England, and whose chef d'oeuvres in this interesting line of business are the rose ‘Her Majesty’, and ‘William Francis Bennett’.
