E. B. Le Grice: E. B. Le Grice, North Walsham, Norfolk
After leaving Paston Grammar School, North Walsham, Mr Le Grice, at the age of 16 years went as a pupil to Messrs. H. Morse and Sons, of Norwich. Two years later, in 1922, at the age of 18, he began his business on his own. Starting the hard way, that is with an open field for miles from the East Coast of Norfolk, he has created during the past 29 years the business and reputation that he now enjoys. It was not long before he turned his attention to hybridisation and produced a number of seedlings...... In the days when Else and Kirsten Poulson were considered new, Mr. Le Grice was bitten by the floribunda bug and has since taken a keen interest in their cultivation and hybridisation. Further, he has carried out extensive trials in the methods of pruning this class of rose, and it is well for those interested to refer, when in doubt, to the article he contributed on the subject to the Rose Annual for 1948. The home nursery, which consists of 12 acres, is augmented by farm land on which Roses are grown once only when it reverts to its original use. By hiring such land it is possible every year to plant the roses stocks on new soil. An exhibitor for many years Mr Le Grice has also submitted many new seedlings for adjucation by the appropriate panel. A member of our council and two committees (Publications and Trial Ground) he renders valuable service to our cause and is as exacting, sometimes, as the East Coast that demands hardiness not only of the Rose but those who produce them.
