Phantom (MACcatsan). McGredy 1993. Ground Cover shrub. 'Eyeopener' x 'Pandemonium'; scarlet; 8 reports on 10 plants; 1-2 years; 80cms; 7.9 rating. Further favourable reports this year, all reports find it very healthy with long arching growths. The flowers are borne in trusses and are large bright scarlet singles with brilliant golden stamens. Very spectacular when in full bloom. Kaitaia thinks it is fabulous and beautiful, grows about 2 metres in all directions. Would look mighty as a weeping standard. Great rose and something different.

Phantom (MACcatsan); McGredy 1993; Ground Cover Shrub; 'Eyeopener' x 'Pandemonium'; scarlet; 5 reports on 5 plants; 1 year; 1.1 metres; 8.0 rating. First time out for this new ground cover shrub, and the reports are all favourable. A Franklin grower describes it well as "very healthy with long arching growths bearing large trusses of large bright scarlet single flowers with gold stamens". A Canterbury reporter calls it a "garden stopper", producing a great garden display. Napier and Waikato both think it shows promise with its vibrant flowers and vigorous growth. A unique and spectacular rose when in full flight..

This year the 'Most Novel Rose in Trial' was awarded to Sam McGredy's ground cover shrub rose Phantom (MACcatsan), the huge trusses of large semi-double dazzling scarlet red blooms with brilliant golden yellow stamens are a spectacular sight to behold. The size of the flowers and the attractively waved fluted petals make this rose stand apart from other roses of this type. The flowers bedeck a plant of impeccable health with brilliant green foliage. The growth arches up and out presenting a dense mass of leaves and flowers, a very handsome shrub indeed.

The intensely scarlet red blooms with large bright gold centers create a sensuous mystery like the Andrew Webber production … The single blooms are produced on a mounded, spreading bush with dark green foliage that provides a perfect backdrop for its stellar performance of continuous bloom. Don't miss this four star beauty. 3 ft. tall by 4 ft. wide. (1992)
