David Ruston, South Australia. Roses of Distinction.
For its magnificent, bold, shiny and large foliage so closely packed on very thick stems, 'Duke of Windsor' can be identified from afar. The colour of the flower, too, is probably the brightest orange of any hybrid tea. Some people will say that the flower is not large enough for the stem and foliage, but that does not worry me unduly.

Duke of Windsor [One of Harry Wheatcroft's selections of the Best Hybrid Teas.] Introduced in Britain in 1968. Parentage: 'Spartan' x 'Montezuma'; light vermilion, a softer 'Super Star' colour, with a sheen... Where 'Super Star' colour is required in a lower-growing rose, the Duke is our best answer yet... Certificate of Merit, Britain, 1968.

E. F. Allen. Awards to New Rose Seedlings in Great Britain in 1968
Once again it was a good year for scent and my short list of "possibles" for the Henry Edland Memorial Medal was made up of one cultivar with 9 marks for fragrance, five with 8 marks and ten with 7 marks. The medal was finally given to 'Duke of Windsor' ('Prima Ballerina' x seedling), to which I had given 7 marks. It is probably the best of the strongly scented seedlings although to my nose, not the most fragrant of the good ones. This rose, which was raised by Tantau, was also given a Certificate of Merit. It is a dwarf growing but extremely vigorous HT with wonderfully healthy foliage and very broad leaflets. The relatively smal flowers are luminous vermilion in colour and the scent is pleasing. Although not, perhaps a classical show rose, it should make a first class garden cultivar and I have ordered it already for my own garden.

Harry Wheatcroft presents his new introductions for 1968.
Duke of Windsor  From Mathias Tantau, one of the world's outstanding hybridists and raiser of Super Star and Fragrant  Cloud comes this magnificent new rose. It has been honoured by H.R.H. The Duke of Windsor in allowing it to bear his title and I'm sure that it will prove worthy of it. The colour is the most exciting I've ever seen - glowing vermilion. Good bedding habit, medium-sized flower of perfect shape, healthy foliage, and a fragrance that is remarkable and unexpected in a rose of this colour.
