Bred by Jean-Marie Gaujard (1903-1995) (France, before 1948).
Introduced in France by Jean-Marie Gaujard in 1949 as 'Opera'.
Introduced in United Kingdom by Wheatcroft Brothers Ltd. in 1949 as 'Opera'.
Introduced in United States by Jackson & Perkins Co. (Newark, NY) in 1950 as 'Opera'.
Introduced in Australia by Hazlewood Bros. Pty. Ltd. in 1951 as 'Opera'.

Hybrid Tea, Pernetiana.  

Scarlet to orange-red, yellow undertones.  Moderate fragrance.  Average diameter 6".  Very large, full (26-40 petals), cupped bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  Long buds.  

Upright.  Large, glossy, light green, leathery foliage.  

Height: 3' (90cm).  Width: 2' (60cm).

USDA zone 6b and warmer.  Disease susceptibility: susceptible to blackspot .  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.
