Notes on the Origin and Evolution of our Garden Roses
C. C. Hurst, Sc.D., PH.D., F.L.S.

Parsons' Pink China is a diploid with 14 chromosomes in the body-cells and 7 in both the male and female germ-cells. Although a diploid, its chromosomes are not regular in their behaviour and weak pairings in the germ-cell divisions lead to defective pollen and embryo-sacs and consequent sterility. In this respect the Pink Chinas behave as hybrids rather than pure species.

Blush china. Flowers medium, 2 & 1/2 in., pale rose pink fading to crimson pink, semi-double; pistils very short, red. Pedicel a little glandular; hip smooth, oval. Calyx beyond bud, two minute wings. Leaves small, very pointed; hooked thorns on midrib; stipules long, fringed, almost like Polyantha. Wood green; a few large curved thorns, not more than one between each leaf. Often confused with Hermosa, but easily distinguished by few thorns, Hermosa has many, right up to bracts; oval hip, Hermosa has round hip; few petals, Hermosa almost Cabbage-like. Chinensis minima of some Continental growers I make identical with this. A garden plant for a thousand years (see Plate 8). Mr. Smith, of Newry, tells us that this is the 'Last Rose of Summer' celebrated by Tom Moore, the Irish poet.
