Bloom:
Crimson and red, ages to mauve . Strong fragrance. Medium, full (26-40 petals), quartered bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.
Habit:
Suckers on its own roots.
Height: 39" to 6' (100 to 185cm). Width: 3' to 6' (90 to 185cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 8b. Prune after flowering is finished. This rose blooms on old wood.

Notes:
English sources frequently attribute this rose to William Paul and assign the date 1848, which is the same year Paul published The Rose Garden.
Joyaux questions this due to its French name and the fact that it was listed in Vibert's catalog of 1836 question about breeder and date. See References for more information.
"Orphan of July" as per the French law of December 13, 1830, refers to the orphans of age 7-18 of the revolution of July 27-29, 1830, whose upbringing was to be paid by the state.
