'Grandpa  Dickson'    Medium -- Yellow      Remontant P3    H1  ****
A  good yellow rose, with quite a lot of red flushes as the flowers open, especially in hot weather. It is not the most lusty of growers, but it does provide flowers of exceptional quality. Although it is primarily a garden rose, anyone with a greenhouse would  be rewarded by blooms  of exceptional beauty by taking a  few plants of 'Grandpa' inside. The colour is fairly light, with a suggestion of lime.   This is one of Pat Dickson's most successful Hybrid  Teas, and  won him  the President's International Trophy. It was raised from ('Kordes' Perfecta' x Governador Braga da Cruz') x 'Piccadilly', and introduced in 1966. The name was changed in the United States to 'Irish Gold'.’’

Dickson won the [Royal National Rose Society's President's] trophy with 'Grandpa Dickson' in 1965. 'Grandpa Dickson' is a magnificent rose of a light yellow colour -- but just about that time, or a little later, Kordes brought out 'Peer Gynt', which is not quite as good as 'Grandpa Dickson' but is a deep, deep yellow, and the deeper yellow is always what the public prefers.

Irish Gold  Yellow Hybrid Tea (Pat 2769). This 1970 Rose of the Year, introduced by Jackson and Perkins Company, has won the Gold Medal and Prize of the City of Belfast, Ireland;  and the Trial Ground Certificate, Gold Medal and President’s Trophy from the Royal National Rose Society of Australia.  Hybrid Tea ‘Irish Gold’ begins as a one-inch, light yellow bud.  Slowly the outer petals roll down in a broad quill, and inner petals unfold until the bloom is a unique starburst form, 4 inches in diameter. The colour is clear lemon yellow, with slight pinking of the petal edges in cool weather. Delicately fragrant blooms have good keeping quality, and grow on medium-long stems. Foliage is outstanding - dark glossy green and highly decorative. The plant is free-branched and gives a profusion of blooms, repeating well and growing actively all season. Disease resistance is excellent. ‘Irish Gold’ was hybridized by Alec Dickson and Sons of Ireland, and it’s ancestors include ‘Peace’, ‘Independence’ and ‘Kordes Perfecta’.

Mr. J. Henshaw, Heidelberg, Victoria.  The New Ones.
Grandpa Dickson This cultivar was slow to become established. The form is good and the colour, although attractive, is not striking.
