This definitely grows straight up. It could be used as a pillar.

Fighterfighter did have its moments for me. The fragrance was strong, the new foliage was a beautiful red and cut flowers lasted a long time in the vase. But it did not do well with the prolonged 100+ degrees Fahrenheit heat wave in my area of Southern California. The roses turned pink and the leaves fried and fell off. I went to a local rose nursery and it was easy to tell which roses were doing well in the heat and which ones were not. Fighterfighter was not among those doing well. I imagine it would be a great rose in a cooler zone.

Its really good in Oregon. You are right.
Granted, it has typical HT maladies, but its overall really good for a rose that is both red and fragrant.
