Have bought a couple of these this year and am loving how quickly they're coming on (I live in Melbourne, Australia).
I read someone say that they're slow to get going, but then become a bloom factory after a few years, but mine (especially the first one I bought, about 6 months ago, which was very young and its canes were only about as thick as a pencil) are really growing strongly now. They're sending out new (rich red) growth all over the place and the roots are also growing very quickly (they're coming out of the bottom of the 12 inch pot already). The one I bought about 6 months ago will probably have about 20 or more blooms in this spring flush, which is pretty good for such a young plant in a relatively small pot. (My Mister Lincoln, which is a year older plant, in the same sized pot, but not getting quite as much sun, has just one bud on it at the moment.)
I am so looking forward to seeing how it goes once I've potted it up again (or put it in the ground) and it's more established, as the fragrance alone on these is just amazing and it looks like these will be super-prolific, which I love.
I think Papa Meilland has the best form of the 4 well known super fragrant dark reds (Papa, Mister Lincoln, Oklahoma and Firefighter) and I love the fragrances of all 4, but it seems Firefighter is clearly the most prolific of the 4 and can be superbly formed, too.
My two have been pretty prone to BS, though, but that may have been due to the fact they seem to need a lot of water and more than I was initially giving them, so they may have been stressed, making them more susceptible to it. It will be interesting to see if it's still a problem once they're more established and in bigger pots, or the ground. Even if it does stick around, though, it's not as much of a problem as it would be on other varieties, as these send out new growth so fast that you hardly notice the missing leaves lost to BS.

Hello Steve - I have this rose and really love it. The blooms are gorgeous and the fragrance is lovely. I find Firefighter is quite disease resistant in my no spray garden. It gets minor blackspot at its worst. I hope you will really enjoy your Firefighter roses!

Thanks for that, I have a feeling I will! Glad to hear yours are relatively healthy. Mine seem to be going better now, with more water and more mulch. I just saw a couple in bloom in a small pot at a local nursery on the weekend and they looked fantastic (high centred and swirling, which they aren't always) and they smelled AMAZING. The first one that bloomed for us this year didn't have any perfume, so I had forgotten just how much I love the fragrance of this variety. I like it just as much as the fragrances of Papa, Mister and Oklahoma, if not more.
The Firefighter's seem to last SOOOO much longer in the vase than the others, though. My one bloom from my Mister Lincoln and the first bloom from my older Firefighter were picked on the same day and while the Mister Lincoln bloom went from just opened bud form, to finished, in about 24 hours, (even though it was a pretty big one, on a long stem, in plenty of water), the Firefighter lasted about a week, even though it was one of a cluster and as such only had about a 3 inch stem and was only in a tiny 3inch deep, one inch wide, vase. The difference was amazing. I imagine if the Firefighter one had been a single, on a longer stem, in more water, it would have lasted even longer.
It's looking like Firefighter is going to be a beauty!

This is my first year growing firefighter, and out of the 16 I planted this year it's already my favorite. To no fault of it own it got of to a rocky start. (Damn rabbits). After some bricks and chicken wire, it was the first to recover.. I can't wait till next year, when its a bit more established.

I am interested in the comment comparing firefighter to Mr. Lincoln. I love a red rose with good scent, but do not like roses that only last 3 or 4 days in the garden. Mr lincoln, oklahoma, and papa meiland all fall into the too short flower life catagory, although I have only had one bloom on a new own root oklahoma so far and have not passed final judgement yet. Kardinal and opening night last, especially kardinal, last in the garden but lack scent. I am looking for a good red rose with fragrance that will last at least a week in the garden. The best I have found so far is fragrant charm (royal william), which last 5 or 6 days. Will firefighter meet the need?

Dame de Coeur last a long time and keeps it deep red color. In fact, the longer it stays the darker it gets. I've had roses on the bush for almost two weeks at times --- and that's with the HOT glaring sun of Texas!

Try Vetran's Honor. Beautiful rose, nice scent. Lasts on the bush or in a vase.

Mr LINCOLN has the best scent of any red rose, but OPENING NIGHT is the most beautiful red color, which does NOT blue out, and it lasts for days! The stems are single & long. It is NOT as dark as BLACK MAGIC, which is also a superior red, if you like the deep, dark color.

I currently grow 20-some varieties of (unsprayed) roses in the San Jose, California area. The region is brutal when it comes to PM, almost all descendants of China roses are affected, even supposedly very disease resistant ones like Thomas Affleck and Duchesse de Brabant. Despite getting no sun until afternoon, Firefighter has never shown a speck of PM or rust, and when exposed to BS, displays almost no symptoms. Between that and its beautiful and amazingly fragrant blooms, it has become my favorite HT, and one of only 3 (going on 2?) that I still grow. The blooms on mine tend to last 5-8 days, so I can't really complain about that aspect, either.
