I would love to hear comments of people's experiences with this rose. I have read that it is extremely fragrant, hardy, disease resistant, and tolerant of some shade, but also that the flowers open very quickly and that it is not all that different from "Mr. Lincoln".

I would say that Firefighter is a better rosebush than Mister Lincoln. I have both, and the Mister Lincoln definitely gets more powdery mildew. The flowers do not open more quickly than ML. The scent is just as intense as well.

I believe that Firefighter is better than Mr. Lincoln. Both are richly fragrant and dark red velvety in petal texture with loads of substance. Mr. Lincoln is more prone to BS and FF more prone to PM it seems but both will get both diseases to some extent. Mr. Lincoln really loses out on stinginess of bloom and slow repeat though, so I give the edge to Firefighter. Mr. Lincoln just finally bored me to tears after five years in my garden, but FF remains one I really like.
I shovel pruned ML this past Spring 2009.

Just wanted everyone to know this rose was named for the Firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. "Remember Me" Rose Gardens will be building 3 rose gardens near where the planes crashed that day and each garden will have one rose bush for each victim that day....nearly 3000 roses in each garden. They have been introducing roses every year named for different victim groups. Other roses include Soaring Spirits (Twin Tower victims), Forty Heroes (Flight 93), We Salute You (The Pentagon), and The Finest (NYC Police). Remember-me-rose.org

Fragrant and great for cutting. This rose is very similar to Mr Lincoln in bloom color and fragrance, both can take on pink tones on the bush and both have a strong damask/classic "rose" fragrance. (On a visit several years ago to the International Rose Test Garden at Washington Park here in Portland, the beds of the these two roses looked so similar that from a distance I mistook Firefighter for Mr. Lincoln.)

Firefighter is long lasting in the vase and the fragrance lasts well in the vase, too. If you love Mr Lincoln, this rose won't disappoint. (I personally prefer the depth of color and damask/ old rose fragrance from Oklahoma, but Oklahoma is stingy while Firefighter is more prolific.)
