According to E. Verdier, 'Maréchal Niel' is a found rose discovered by Louis Castel in 1857 in the garden of Mr. Chateau in Montauban - see References. The attribution to Pradel is probably due to a confusion with the hybrid perpetual of the same name issued by this breeder in 1861. Also, Pradel was the president of the rosarians of Montauban, where Castel was living.
