Gerry Hughes, a Dublin rose-grower, found a lovely creamy white and pink sport on 'Mischief', a rose that he considered worth sending for trial at the RNRS trial grounds in St. Albans. it didn't win anything, but it was worth putting into commerce.

Mischief (8 votes). McGredy, 1960. 'Peace' x' Spartan'. Gold Medal and President's International Trophy, 1961. Coral salmon, paling as the flowers age. The blooms vary somewhat in colouring, with the autumn crop normally really intense. Mr Shreeves describes it as a salmon pink, but I hardly think he would quarrel with coral salmon. The flowers are of medium size, normally exquisitely formed and sweetly fragrant. I have known seasons when the earliest flowers have come malformed, possibly because of late frosts. Mr James' comment is appropriate: "What a lovely spiral twirl this rose gives to its beautiful coral salmon-petalled blooms - seen en masse it is a lovely sight." It is remarkably free flowering and quick to repeat in all weathers, as Mr Thomson points out. It is excellent for cutting, too. Mr Squires awards it first place in his selection because it has repeatedly fulfilled all of his requirements over a number of years and is still improving with age. Mr Gault finds it a good grower, very free flowering over a long season and very resistant to bad weather. The habit of growth is vigorous and branching, clothed to ground level with abundant, light green, semi-glossy foliage. Mr Raban considers it has a very good habit and reasonable disease resistance. While it does not suffer much from Black Spot or powdery mildew in my garden, it had a severe attack of Rust some years ago and I had to burn the plants. My new stock of plants has not been attacked since it was planted four or five years ago and does splendidly. I feel that susceptibility to Rust has been inherited from the pollen parent, but it is such a lovely rose that it is worth going to some trouble to protect it from this disease.

F. C. H. Witchell. The Pick of the Bunch.
1961. 'Mischief' (Hybrid Tea). Raiser, S. McGredy, Northern Ireland. This delicate coral-salmon rose produces large heads of bloom somewhat after the fashion of a floribunda. Of medium height, it is vigorous, free flowering and very fragrant. Normally regarded as a bedding rose, it can be persuaded to fill out its shapely blooms to exhibition size. In proof of this, it has actually won the Medal for the best bloom at a National show. It appears to be reasonably resistant to disease except in areas where rust is prevalent. It deservedly maintains its position in the Rose Analyses concerned with roses for general garden cultivation.

p58. Nord-Rose is organized by a society of Scandinavian nurserymen....I have won numerous Nord-Rose awards, and that is partly because my roses are bred in the north and are especially suitable for northern temperate climates such as Scandinavia has. 'Mischief' and .... have all won.

p89. 'Mischief is clear enough to any Englishman, and a Frenchman would pronounce it in much the same way, lengthening the vowels a little, so that it becomes more like 'Mees Sheef'; but an Italian would make it 'Meeskee-eff'. The invention of names that will look the same and be pronounced the same in any language is very difficult indeed....

p92. Mischief a word that seems to me appropriate and enchanting without my really being able to say why. 'Mischief' came about in an amusing way. I was arranging a display of a new rose at the Summer Rose Show of the Royal National Rose Society, watched by the president of the society, Major-General R. F. B. Naylor. He said: 'Why not call that rose Mischief?' and I adopted the idea at once. It was only later that I discovered that it was the name of his dog!

p122. The President's Trophy came my way four times, once with 'Mischief'....

p142. The sixties, I am proud to say, were greatly influenced by the roses I bred: 'Mischief' in 1961....
