Shrub,
pretty vigorous, slightly armed. Leaves, of a purplish green on the upper surface, of a variable purple on the under. Leaflets, three or five ; oval, regularly toothed. Flowers, well-formed, middle-sized ; deep-purple ; very fragrant.

Coccinea is evidently a hybrid of the crimson Chinese, as it has the pleasing tea-like scent of Rosa odorata with the vivid colouring of Rosa semperflorens.

Rosa Thea coccinea. Scarlet-coloured Tea-Rose. The branches are dark red; the foliage shaded purple on the underside; the double, extraordinarily dark purple-red blooms have a very strong Tea fragrance. To be found at Mr. Cels, who obtained it from a seed bed.
