'Rubaiyat' rose References
Book  (1954)

p113-3 Editor. As a starter, I suggest the following four varieties as being unbeatable for fragrance. ‘Red Ensign’, ‘Hector Deane’, ‘Patrick Anderson’, ‘Rubaiyat’.

p137-1 R. W. Smith, Ivanhoe, Vic. ‘Rubaiyat’. This rose has improved with me, the growth being good and strong and the foliage excellent. The colour sometimes is a little harsh, but I have had some very nice blooms of deep rose with lighter shadings. The form is good, and there is sweet rose perfume.

p142-7 Mr. R. Doidge, of Auckland, New Zealand. ‘Rubaiyat’. This variety seems to have a weakness to rust. One plant grew more strongly than the others and produced occasional blooms of exhibition standard.

p145-20. Mr. Harry Bennett, Te Kowhai, N.Z. ‘Rubaiyat’. Rose-red. strong growth; balls and marks; poor colour.

p136-1 Mr. Jim Bennet, Hamilton, NZ. ‘Rubaiyat’. Excellent growth and foliage. Colour is sometimes a little hard, but otherwise the variety is excellent.

p144-3. Mr. E. Fisher Van der Veen. Christchurch, NZ. ‘Rubaiyat’. Vigorous, tall grower. Dark green, leathery foliage. Bloom long pointed of good shape. Light red to deep pink in colour. Strong fragrance. This is a lovely rose which will look well on the show bench.

‘Rubaiyat’. HT. Deep red, perhaps best described as cerise. Free flowering, richly scented and an extra vigorous grower, even on dry land. Ireland. McGredy, 1948

p57-1 Dr. A. S. Thomas. The colour of ‘Rubaiyat’ is strIking rather than beautiful. Even at its best, the outer aspects of the petals are a dull pinkish red – at its worst this colour fades to almost a dirty white. The inner face of each petal is of a new shade of red that is difficult to describe. There is a suggestion of an infusion of pink and crimson. It is not a colour that mixes well with others in floral arrangements but, when good, it is a magnificent show rose with a very high pointed centre and plenty of substance. The plant is faultless.

p87-4. C. C. Hillary, Perth, WA. ….I have been astounded at the large number of really splendid blooms produced by such roses as…. and ‘Rubaiyat’ yet the plants have been only lightly pruned.

p60-5 C. C. Hillary, Perth, WA. My Third Rose Garden. Of the newer roses, the best growth has been made by ‘Rubaiyat’. It is the biggest bush in my new garden and at the end of November was producing its second crop of flowers. Although it is said to lack petalage (I have not yet counted the petals myself), it is a very beautiful, high–centred rose and, as it retains its shape for a considerable time, I feel sure that it will make a good exhibition rose.

p133-2 Mr. C. J. McCormick, Gympie, Queensland. I did not plant ‘Rubaiyat’, but have seen its magnificent show blooms in this city, and all borne on strong, upright stems.

p13-2 Harry H. Hazlewood. The New Roses of 1948-49. ‘Rubaiyat’ comes from McGredy, (1946), with long pointed buds opening to large, very fragrant blooms of rosy red with a lighter exterior of petal. It received an A.A.R.S.. award in 1947 which vouches for its general high standard and all-round quality. Another border line red or pink variety.

p43-4 Dr. A. S. Thomas. ‘Rubaiyat’ (1 plant, 1 year). A bicolour which some people may like. It does not appeal to me. The outside of each petal is an insignificant pale pink; the inner aspect is a dull red not far removed from pink. Always looks faded. It may be better in autumn or on older plants. With plenty of petals and good form it could be used as a specimen bloom. Free blooming. Vigorous. Pale foliage.
