Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1992-93 Season. Hybrid Teas.
'Spiced Coffee' (MACjuliat); McGredy 1991; 'Harmonie' x 'Big Purple'; beige and lavender; 9 reports on 11 bushes; 1-2 years; 1.1 metres; 6.7 rating. Variable reports on this new HT covering only 5 areas of the country. All agree it is an unusual rose with interesting variations in colour from coral or cerise pink buds through to variable lavender beige depending on the time of season, in the cooler weather it shows more lavender than when it is hot when it is more putty coloured, certainly different. Some growers are not happy with the plant finding it difficult to grow and only a few blooms, bad powdery mildew in prone areas and foliage often lacking in general good health. One reporter not happy at all saying it is the worst rose in the garden and is discarding. Form of flowers generally good and it is a rose that will excite comment from many and the floral artists should love it. Early days yet - lets see what next season brings forth.
