Notes:
Bordighera, a town on the Liguriuan Riviera, was an early center of horticulture. The German gardener Ludwig Winter, who had worked at Thomas Hanbury's garden in La Mortola near Ventimiglia, started breeding roses in Bordighera in 1873. From October 1874 onwards he sent cut flowers by rail to Munich.
