I see this rose is offered by Rogue Valley and want to order it in honor of my son. However,
HMF lists it as hardy to zone 7 or above. I live in zone 4/5 but grow a number of hybrid teas which
are listed as zone 6 or higher. With adequate protection they survive my winters (they are cut down to about
6 inches but rebound nicely). Sometimes I have seen errors on zone hardiness here on HMF so I
was wondering if you knew if the zone 7 or above was correct. Is this rose less cold-hardy than other hybrid
teas? Thank you.

Celeste,

As your experience shows, zone hardiness is very subjective. Much depends upon your microclimate, the amount of winter protection you give your roses and other factors. I've only grown roses in zones 9 and 10, so I fear I'm not in a position to comment on how this particular rose would fare in zone 6 vs. other hybrid teas. My suspicion is that zone 7 is an estimate and given how beautiful this rose is, along with your positive experience in growing HTs in zone 6, it might well be worth your giving it a try. Perhaps others who have grown 'Loving Son' in colder climates than mine could provide comments on their more relevant experience with this rose.

Thank you Cliff. I think I am going to order it & take a chance. It is indeed a lovely rose, judging by yours & others pictures.
One more question.....your photos of it show a pink blush in the center, which I just love, but other photos show the rose looking
solid white. Is this variable? Does certain factors bring out the pink? Also, how is the fragrance?
Thanks again!

Celeste,

If you look at all of the photos of Loving Son on HMF, you'll find one of mine that shows it as pretty much sold white, and you'll find one by Elizabeth_Roses that shows the pink. It is indeed variable, though from memory I'm afraid I can't recall whether it's seasonal or due to other factors. Fragrance is quite good.

All our 90 or so hybrid teas are listed as not hardy in zone 4/5. None of them are cane hardy here. We choose to push the envelope since we like hybrid teas. I like to think HMF lists the zone where the rose will have live cane surviving winter. I know they shouldn't list Color Magic as hardy in zone 5 though it does well for us. Don't have experience with Loving Son here, sorry.
