Dear Cass, I keep marveling at your photo of 'Compassion'. I am seriously thinking about getting it for my garden (I don't have enough supports to accommodate climbers, that's why I don't have it yet).
Could you please tell me if this rose can be grown without support, like a large free standing shrub?
I will greatly appreciate your help.

Yes, it is grown as a shrub. You can see the fence behind it. It doesn't grow toward or even lean on the fence, but rather grows out in the opposite direction. It is own root. Budded, it might produced much longer canes that require support. Pruned down to fewer canes, it might also produce longer, looser canes. I barely prune this plant at all.
