I am happy to see this photo, Hmfusr. It shows the extent of the prickles.

I'm glad it is helpful. I get gouged a fair bit while weeding, but so far don't regret not including pricklefulness in my choosing criteria. Still in the phase of apologising to them if I break off a bud or the leaf/stem that has been getting into position to savage the back of my arm or hand, when I try to move it. That phase may pass when Kiftsgate has outgrown its lily pilly and needs to be cut back. Or Paul's Himalayan Musk its cotoneaster and pittorsporum hedge.
