Interesting looking rose. Pity about the lack of scent.

Pity about the lack of information too. Bonita, have you asked Elaine Horne (Trewallyn 's daughter and present owner) about 'Spanish Lady'? It is not in their 2013 catalogue. I know Pat Toolan asked Elaine once about this rose, but I am not sure if she got a specific answer.
I had a thought that it may be the 1934 rose 'Lisbeth Prim' which did get to Australia, but didn't sound all that healthy. I've added a few references for 'Lisbeth Prim'.

Hmm. Description of Lisbeth Prim doesn't seem to quite match. "Copper shading" and "dark flecks" doesn't bring to mind deep red and dark stripes. The references also say it has a strong scent, which is not the case with Spanish Lady.

What about 'Red Intuition'?

Introduction date is too late. SL is pre-1997. RI is 2004.

Yep. But sometimes the registration date can come years after a rose is introduced - I have added a 2002 reference for 'Red Intuition'. But a better reason is Bonita's own listing of roses wherein she was listing both roses 'Red Intuition' and 'Spanish Lady' in 2008.

I grew 'Spanish Lady' for years & discussed it with a friend who asked Trewallyn about its origin a couple of years ago. From memory it is a sport of a red floribunda that occurred in Brisbane (in the 80s I think).

Ok, but SL is still claimed to be pre-1997, and RI wasn't even discovered until 1999.
Bonita may well have been listing both roses in 2008, but that's about a decade later so I don't see how it's relevant.

Bonita, in growing both roses, would have seen any differences and would have known it was not 'Red Intuition'.
Thank you Damo. That is an important clue. I have Trewallyn's 1998 catalogue and they listed 'Spanish Lady' with the hybrid teas. Perhaps Bonita could contribute some bush photos this coming season and her opinion whether the rose appears to be a hybrid tea, or floribunda. I sent an email to the Queensland Rose Society to ask if they know anything more about the rose. Yesterday I looked through all my Australian catalogues from 1980-1989 but found nothing. If anyone has any earlier Trewallyn catalogues, they might be of interest.

Oh ok. That makes sense. My mind was stuck on introduction dates, so I was puzzled as to why you were talking about 2008.

I will reply further in the comments. These conversations in photos are very hard to find, years down the track.
