My ‘Broletto’ is a walled garden of about 400 square meters. When we moved here in 2004 there were some old grapevines on a pergola, a few hyacinths and daffodils, but mostly plenty of nettles and weeds: the garden had been in complete abandon for at least 10 years. We began planting a few roses that Spring, some more were added in the Autumn and many more plants in the following year. The site is hidden from the street by the house in the North side and surrounded by other gardens beyond the stone walls. There is some formality given by its rectangular shape and by the oval lawn encircling the old pergola which divides the plot in two, but beside that the borders are informal and not rigid. I am quite partial to English and old garden roses. They are the biggest part of my collection. I grow most of them on the pergola, where they mingle with the grapevines and some clematis, and along the Eastern wall underplanted with herbs. Chemicals are not used in our garden. In the last seasons we added several ornamental grasses and perennials to the borders, in order to give them a more natural appearance and a longer season of interest.
