About 70 roses mixed with other shrubs, perennials and annuals. It is a modest garden, as I have only 1/4 acre, lots of trees, and questionable design skills.
"I haven't much time to be fond of anything," says Sergeant Cuff. "But when I have a moment's fondness to bestow, most times... the roses get it. ...... One of these days (please God) I shall retire from catching thieves and try my hand at growing roses ... Show me two things more opposite from the other than a rose and a thief."
(From Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone, 1868)
