This garden is part of Cheops Rose Garden. The McGredy Rose Garden was officially opened by Dr Sam McGredy IV on 23 November 2009. It is a growing collection with roses bred by Sam II, Sam III and Sam IV. The collection has 160 roses planted with another 24 sought but not ready to plant yet. At this stage all plants have been located in NZ. As far as Sam IV and I know it is the only garden dedicated to the McGredy roses and the biggest collection.
There are many roses overseas that would be excellent to add to the collection but I need support to do this through tissue culture - ideally somebody at University keen to learn the skills would be perfect because to do this commercially is financially beyond me.
The rest of the garden is a growing collection of mainly Heritage Roses but more modern roses are being included particularly those bred by New Zealanders. Currently there are approximately 1000 varieties of roses in the garden but over 2000 bushes. The garden also has an interesting range of bulbs, perennials, natives, shrubs and climbers to enhance the roses and attract wildlife.
The garden is organically managed and does not get watered but thrives. The garden is on the itinerary for The World Federation Conference in Palmerston North New Zealand 2013.
