Soil is somewhat clayey, dark brown soil over dolerite, a foothill of Mt Wellington a couple of streets away. It can be subject to strong winds. There are lots of earthworms in the soil. Before the housing development in the 1940's, the land was used for farming and orchards.
I have 60 roses, a mixture of heritage and modern, bush and climbing, and one rambler (Alberic Barbier), with perennials around them. I have a small vegie patch.
