[From A Book of Gardening: Ideas, Methods, Designs, by Penelope Hobhouse, p. 205:] A small walled garden such as that of the Chapel Garden at Castle Drogo, first designed and planted by Dillstone in the 1920s, is particularly vulnerable to wind currents... in 1985 rose and lavender beds were renewed... The beds were treated with dazomet against rose replant disease... The roses in the more open flower beds were all chosen for their wind resistance and to smother the ground quickly. They are all suitable for gorwing in restricted beds or even in containers. More robust and taller than miniatures, they grow to 60 cm (2 ft): at this height, they withstand the gusts of wind that so often destabilize rose bushes. Most are of recent introduction, but an old variety dating from 1910, 'Yvonne Rabier', is on the right scale. It is of Polyantha type; vigorous, and with scented flowers, it will perform all summer if regularly dead-headed... clumps of 'Petit Four' and 'Robin Redbreast' alternated with low-growing lavender...
