Roses have long been associated with the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and early photographs and maps show them at various locations around the garden.
A large planting of “historic roses … from Hilier's Nurseries of Winchester” was made in 1978 just inside C Gate. In 1999 the collection was redesigned by in house landscape architect Andrew Laidlaw and resited to its current location. The collection is curated by Matt Howard.
The Species Rose Collection has 128 varieties, half of which are not species but historically important garden varieties. Australian bred roses, sourced from Ian Huxley of Hilltop Roses (no longer operating) are also represented.
Well labelled and displayed, the collection is grouped just inside Gate B on the Gardens' eastern boundary, Anderson Street. The Gardens are open every day from 7.30 to dusk.
The collection is best viewed in November when most of the roses are in bloom.
