Elizabeth Blackwell (ca. 1700 Aberdeen - 1758 London) undertook the project of her Herbal to earn money to release her husband from the debtors' prison. She made the illustrations herself, engraved the copper plates and coloured them. The Herbal was issued in weekly sections between 1737-39 and earned her enough to have her husband released.
