'Gloire de Deventer' rose Reviews & Comments

Can anyone tell me about the growth habit of 'Gloire de Deventer'? I'm trying to ID some roses purchased years ago, one of which is this variety; one candidate rose has an arching climbing habit; another candidate does not. Thanks.

But the rose isn't called 'Gloire de Woodenbong', so what's Your point? ... A lack of Caffeïne? I just wrote about Deventer, for in HMF it wasn't mentioned, what this rose was called after. And who in the world would be knowing such a small town already existing/mentioned in the ninth century and getting city rights in the 13th century?

Right. Well in that case the world definitely needs such a rose. I will email all Australian rose breeders and try to get them onside.

Thank You for Your kind suggestion... Too much honor for such a small town in my humble opinion.

Ok, how about contacting this Italian nursery? They claim to have it in stock, and should be able to answer your question. Then you can tell the rest of us. :)

Melissa, I found this in Peter Lambert's catalogue of 1901-2. Maybe Jay-Jay can translate it:
Gloire de Deventer (Soupert & Notting 97). Strauch kräftig, langgestreckte Knospe, Bl. gr., halbgef., rahmgelb, Kehrseite incarnatrosa, Centr. dunkler, sehr wohlriechend. (Devonieusis x Distinction.) Gruppenrose.

I gave it a shot:
Gloire de Deventer (Soupert & Notting 97). Bush strong, elongated bud, big flower, half-full, cream yellow, reverse of an incarnatpink (if the colour is meant of this kind of clover: http://www.partnerandco.fr/Trefle-Incarnat-ROSA-pour-potager), Centr. dark, very fragrant. (Devoniensis x Distinction.) Group- or Bed-rose.

Thanks to both of you, true-blue and Jay-Jay! For what it's worth, I read German. I wonder if "incarnatrose" might mean flesh pink?

Thanks Jay-Jay. Melissa has a point. Incarnat reminds me of Incaranta/maiden's blush/ flesh or blush pink...

If it were German, it would have been written Inkarnat-Rosa. And that would be Flesh-pink... see: http://www.duden.de/suchen/dudenonline/Inkarnat, so I guess You will be right! Il Giardino ai Papa grows this rose, maybe not too far away from You Melissa?

Na klar True Blue! Good luck in Your search Melissa! Maybe some photos when in bloom? From an Italian friend I already got some photos of roses in full bloom. One of them is Banksia lutea... impressive!!!

I guessed, since my German dictionary was under a pile of other massive tomes acting as the base of our television screen. I still don't think of the computer as furnishing adequate dictionaries. I don't know the language as well as I'd like. Il Giardino ai Papa is my garden. The rose list isn't reliable, however. I haven't updated it for several years, not having updated my own list; now I've nearly finished my own catalog and can go on and revise my HMF listing. Thanks for reminding me that I need to do that. My Banksiaes are currently in bloom and we're seeing the start of the warm climate rose flowering: Teas, Chinas, Noisettes. They're early this year, normal since we had a very warm winter. The roses are really good this year, despite what I would have thought was unfavorable weather, droughty, windy, and hot. It has been pleasant talking with you two!
