The strength of this nation is built on the character and steadiness of each of its individual citizens. This is a time when our character and stability is being tested. I am brought to my knees by the courage and commitment displayed by the rescue workers who walked into the valley of the shadow of death with only the thought of bringing out those who needed their help, and lost their own lives. Their lives were not lost in vain. Their demonstration of sacrifice serves as a catalyst for the rest of us as we search for ways to give of ourselves and rise to the occasions that present themselves to us.
Humans are capable of great evil as we well know. But we are also capable of heroism on a grand scale. I lay awake last night trying to think of ways to be grateful to those who have given so much. I would wish we could have a
sculpture depicting a fireman rescuing a child as a memorial to those who gave their lives and those who submit themselves to danger all over our nation. Or as rosarians and gardeners could we build a Garden of Hope in someway, dedicating it to the courage and bravery of those who sacrifice their all so that the rest of us may live. A place of serenity where we could go and contemplate and settle ourselves with internal peace and go out
to spread that peace among those we meet.
My husband and I live on the West Coast and but to paraphase the words of John F. Kennedy "I am a New Yorker." We are all... New Yorkers.
