Full Title: "Rosen-Sammlung zu Wilhelmshöhe / Nach der Natur gemalt von Salomon Pinhas. Kurfürstlich Hessischer Hof-Miniaturmaler 1815"
Salomon Pinhas (1759 Bayreuth - February 19, 1837 Kassel), German miniature painter, who painted the rose collection of Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen during approx. 1800-1806.
[From Rose Letter, May 2015, p. 12:] Significantly and fortunately for rose history, in 1788 Wilhelm IX appointed Salomon Pinhas (1759-1837) as court miniaturist painter. When Wilhelm IX became Elector Wilhelm I, he commissioned Pinhas to paint in watercolor the roses of the grand estate. We can surmise that Pinhas was near the end of his project in 1806 when he requested an annual salary to complete the rose paintings. While the Academy of Arts and the buildings director denied the request, shortly thereafter Elector Wilhelm fled the country. Napoleon’s forces had invaded and conquered. Consequently work on the rose book engravings was interrupted.
